Am I parroting the Pope, quoting a Mormon church decree? No, it turns out some Stanford scientists are telling us divorce is bad for the planet. Not a matter of faith at all they say, but science and numbers.
Their findings: divorce leads to more households per capita and each household is a waste of resources. Two can live more greenly than 1 + 1. Three can live more efficiently than 2 + 1. And so forth. In many nations divorce means more TV sets, more vacuum cleaners, more refrigerators, more ...

Reviewers of wireless routers obsess about throughput, but let’s face it: Few of us are shuffling HD video from PC to TV. The performance issue that matters to most people is range, since many users find that they have a room or two in their house where Wi-Fi just won’t go. And if you don’t have the range, speed doesn’t matter at all.
To get some expert tips on maxxing out a wireless signal, I called Jason Owen, director of product strategy at Hawking Technology, a company that specializes in products that help you na...

In an e-mail sent to Microsoft employees on February 22, Microsoft Platforms & Services President Kevin Johnson reiterated to Microsofts employees why Microsoft is continuing to pursue its goal of buying Yahoo.
The e-mail was not triggered by any new developments, a Microsoft spokeswoman said. It was simply part of normal communication to employees, she said.
In his note, Johnson didnt say anything that he and other Mic...

Ive used StyleTap on my Windows Mobile devices and find it to be quite valuable in running Palm OS applications like Tide Tool (I still cant find a Windows Mobile version of an app like this). Robert just sent me a link to this video showing an experimental version of StyleTap running on an Apple iPhone/iPod Touch. It looks very slick and they even showed Tide Tool running at top speed. Depending on how the SDK and the...

I met Mike Rothman last night for drinks. He was on a once in a lifetime pass through Southfield, Michigan. I found myself acting like many people do in the presence of a knowledgeable industry analyst. I asked questions. One of them was: What about this 3Com mess? Ill let Rothman give his thoughts at SecurityIncite.com. Here are mine.
Remember that I was the only analyst who thought that the proposed Checkpoint acquisition of SourceFire was a mistake...

Apples new, low-throw, chiclet style keyboard arrived to great controversy. First in the MacBook, then again when it was adopted as the defacto standard USB keyboard for all Macs, replacing the clear lucite and white 109-key keyboard.
People derided the new keyboard design because of its flat and wide keytops, cramped feel, lower key travel and even because of the changes to the layout, specifically the function keys. There were even comparisons to the chiclet keyboard from the IBM PC jr.

Taking images of individual atoms in color

Researchers at Cornell University are using a new kind of scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) to take pictures of individual atoms in color for the first time. It seems odd, but the current generation of electron microscopes can be thought of as expensive black and white cameras where different atoms appear as different shades of gray, said one of the researchers. This new microscope incorporates new aberration-correction technology and can deliver images in about 30 seconds, 50 to 100 times faster than in conventional STEMs. B...

Partly in reaction to my Sun funny, a Microsoft evangelist named Anand Iyer wrote a defense of Steve Ballmerto which another journalist quickly attached a version of my headline.
Leave Steve Ballmer alone.
Iyers point:
I think people have to realize that this man sleeps like 4 hours a day, if that. Every word coming out of his mouth has the potential to change the world in some way.
Yes, Microsoft couldnt run without the wisdom of its CEO. Its nothin...

Amid reports by some users of endless-loop reboots and less-than-impressive performance gains with Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 1, now theres a new SP1 gotcha.
Microsoft accidentally released SP1 to some users on Windows Update this week. While some greeted the mistake with glee, as they didnt want to wait until next month to get it, others werent yet ready to have it pushed to them.
My ZDNet blogging colleague Adrian Kingsley-Hughes has the details, courte...

Scott Guthrie just posted a first look at Silverlight 2 on his blog and confirmed some of the things weve been expecting, first and foremost that Silverlight 2 beta 1 will be released shortly (possibly even before MIX next month?). He also runs down some of the features that we can expect for the beta 1 including WPF UI Framework, Rich Controls, Rich Networking Support and a Rich Base Class Library.
This is going to be a big deal for RIAs. Silverlight 1.0 primarily focused on video and Silverlight 2 looks like its going to h...
