Amazons Kindle ebook reader has been doing pretty well as a consumer device, but weve always thought it had amazing potential as a textbook reader -- especially coupled iTunes-style with Amazons online distribution system. Apparently Princeton University (Jeff Bezoss alma mater) agrees with us, because its just announced plans to publish Kindle version of its textbooks this fall, joining Yale, Oxford, and Berkeley in supporting the device. Its not clear how many books are due to be published on the device or how content like photographs and full-color diagrams will be handled (whats a bio book without red mitochondria? Theyre the "powerhouse" of the
cell!), but were certain students will gladly make the tradeoff to reduce their backpack loads just a little bit.

I had a discussion shortly before the end of the year with one of our exchange students regarding a programming class I wanted to teach. My goal was simply to introduce programming concepts and algorithmic thinking. Heck, Id be happy if the kids could walk out of the class writing passable pseudocode.
My first introduction to programming (aside from SAS for statistical analysis at my job and LOGO in the fourth grade) was C. It wasnt long before we were looking at object oriented programming and the tools available...

If the pen truly is mightier than the sword, Livescribes Pulse smartpen ($149 with 1GB of flash memory, $199 with 2GB) may be able to take out a tank at 50 meters. Arguably the most technologically advanced writing instrument not intended for killing a Bond villain, the Pulse includes an infrared camera (for recording text), dual microphones, a speaker, a headphone jack, and an OLED display that can even play back short "movies" (animations synced with sound). And it manages to pack it all in a pen size that, while still a bit thick, is relatively comfortable and thinner than its closest technological ancestor, the now-discontinued Logitech io2.

Many large-scale government technology initiatives are failing due to an exodus of qualified systems engineers away from the public sector to private industry. An in-depth analysis of the problem conducted by the National Research Council reveals the considerable impact of this problem.
The New York Times described the issue:
That brain drain, military expertssay, is a big factor in a breakdown in engineering management that has made huge cost overruns and long delays the madde...

Now that Nikon has deftly slipped the full frame (FX) D700 into the already tight slot separating its mid-range DX D300 and pro FX D3, we know what youre thinking. Huh? Fortunately, both Rob Galbraith and DP Review have given this a thorough analysis along with a titillating preview courtesy of DP Review. As Rob puts it, "If you own a D3 and a D300, then you have in two separate bodies most of the key bits and pieces that comprise the D700." While the choice between the $1,800 D300 and $3,000 D700 is more clear, prospective $5,000 D3 buyers wont be blamed if they profess a desire to hold-out for the 24.39 megapixel D3X expected within the next 12 months.

Arianna Huffington is planting her flag -- or at least a Post -- in Chicago this summer.
Reached last Friday in London, Huffington said she looked last week to finalize plans for a Chicago version of The Huffington Post Web site, the first of what the writer/Internet entrepreneur hopes will be dozens of localized news sites throughout the United States.
"Chicago seemed a great city in which to test what we wanted to do [with] local around the country," Huffington said. "It has everything ... but wasnt New York or L.A."
Aspiring to Be a Paper
Initially staffed by a single editor, the Chicago site will aggregate coverage of news, sports, politics, crime, arts and business from a variety of local sources, as well as from bloggers, much as her 3-year-old HuffingtonPost...

New research has suggested that technology-based, non-invasive and drug-free techniques may be effective at relieving pain for some migraine sufferers, according to a study presented at the annual American Headache Society meeting in Boston.
The treatment used in clinical trials conducted by Dr. Richard B. Lipton, a researcher in the cause and treatment of migraines, utilized a portable transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) device to treat patients suffering from migraines with auras, perceptual disturbances that warn of oncoming episodes in some sufferers.
Medical Technology on the Bleeding Edge
The device used by Lipton addresses a problem more often treated by drugs. People who frequently experience migraines may receive a preventative drug. Those who have migr...

The latest label following BMG to join Nokias Comes With Music service bandwagon is none other than Warner Music Group. The third-largest label joins the powerful cadre of labels on the service, which as of this posting lacks only EMI for a full major label lineup. As a reminder, the service allows you to download music for 12 months and then keep it as long as you own the device or transfer to a PC. Now, of course, we just need to wait for the devices to roll out.
