Should the online world reflect the "real" world?

August 15th, 2006 Should the online world reflect the real world? Posted by Eric Norlin @ 8:40 am Categories: General Tags: Much is being written around the thread of conversation that David Weinberger started and I responded to. I resolved long ago never to speak publicly about "privacy," as the conversation seems to immediately dive into a black-hole of nothingness. However, at the risk of falling into the same hole around "anonymity," I will try to say something intelligent about this subject. Please note, Ive tried this in the past (the date on that article is 2002), but here I am trying again. One of Davids assertions was that "anonymity" was the "default" in the "real-world." Im putting all of those terms in quotes because Im already seeing debate about exactly what t...

August 15th, 2006 Trolltech programmable phone likely to have uphill battle Posted by David Berlind @ 8:23 am Categories: General, Personal Technology, Wired & Wireless, Mobile Tags: Norway-based Trolltech is demonstrating what it calls the first fully reprogrammable handset in hopes of luring phone designers looking to stay with the pace of innovation. But is staying with the pace of innovation the problem? Or is it the carriers? According to Reuters: A major divide that separates PCs from mobile telephones is that while designers can freely reprogram a computers software, most of a phones functions are fixed at the factory."(Independent) developers are having a hard time figuring out how to participate in the mobile phone market," Benoit Schillings, Trolltechs chief...

More Google domains to think about

August 15th, 2006 More Google domains to think about Posted by Garett Rogers @ 7:54 am Categories: Google Speculation, Google Tags: A few days ago, Google added a few more domain names to their portfolio. This adds to the mystery of Google by making it just fuzzy enough for us to chime in with speculation about what they could possibly mean. As Gary from Resource Shelf (congratulations on your engagement Gary!) points out, here are the domains just recently registered: google-ap.com/net/org googleap.net/org google-app.com/net/org google-apps.net/org google-aps.com/net/org/info googleapp.net/org googleapps.net/org googleaps.net/org/info At first glance, it appears these are related to "Google applications". But do you remember at the beginning of the month when ...

Google Coupons now on Google Maps

August 15th, 2006 Google Coupons now on Google Maps Posted by Garett Rogers @ 7:34 am Categories: Google Tags: Google Coupons what is next? Admittedly, this is a pretty good idea, but I am curious as to how likely it is businesses will use the service. How does the massage therapy business down the street hear of it and will they know how to use it effectively if they do? Is there enough value for businesses? These are all hard questions, and I confess that the answers are unclear to me. However, I am almost certain that if I was to any random business and ask them what the "Google Local Business Center" is, I would be looked at with a blank face. This service needs to be integrated with an entire customer relationship management suite something I think Google should work ...

August 15th, 2006 Do you want TV on your phone? Posted by Matthew Miller @ 7:21 am Categories: Windows Mobile, Smartphone, Apple, On the road Tags: A new feature that carriers and some providers are promoting is mobile TV. While it is cool to show someone live television on your mobile phone now that high speed wireless data networks are expanding, I have often wondered when someone would actually watch TV on their phone. We have been able to get offline movies and TV on our PDAs and smartphones for a few years now and I do actually put shows on my devices when I travel to watch on the airplane. Installing offline content is an enjoyable experience because you can optimize the video for the device, however online, live content still leaves something to be desired with sketch...

August 15th, 2006 Spammer explains how I got spammed (but Im not buying it) Posted by David Berlind @ 7:06 am Categories: General, Software Infrastructure, Security, Web Technology, Government, Legal Tags: Have you ever received that one spam that just pushed you over the edge, making you want to track the spammer down and give him or her a piece of your mind? Earlier this month, I got spammed by Loyalty Solutions, which is apparently a subsidiary of Optimus Companies. It was the wrong spam at the wrong time and I decided, for my own peace of mind, to do something about it. It was the sort of spam that really gets under my skin. Its not the type thats easy to trap for (right now, you anti-spam solution providers are disagreeing whatever you do, please dont write to me or ca...

August 15th, 2006 A database without an operating system? Posted by Dana Blankenhorn @ 7:02 am Categories: General, Applications, Linux, Strategy, Database Management, Events Tags: Not really. But as far as customers can tell, maybe. rPath and Ingres have integrated a database and a Linux installation so it looks to the customer like a single install. The result is what rPath calls a "software appliance," and this concept is at the heart of rBuilder 2.0, which debuts this week at LinuxWorld. The Ingres solution combines rPath Linuxwith the Ingres database, and is code-named Project Icebreaker. Ingres CTO Dave Dargochatted with me about it last week. With a single installation, and a single maintenance stream, were delivering a single solution that simplifies management ...

Disaster avoidance and recovery

August 15th, 2006 Disaster avoidance and recovery Posted by Paul Murphy @ 6:04 am Categories: General, IT Retardants, Disaster avoidance Tags: In Focus ? See more posts on: IT Retardants Its my belief that almost all commercial and personal IT deployments both should and can be planned and implemented to minimise the risk of both processing interruptions and data loss. Sadly, however, its my experience that most people simply dont do the job. If youve got nothing more to worry about than a personal PC or Mac, Bloody drills under realistic conditions lead to bloodless, automated, processing continuity when the real thing hits. thats kind of a non issue - you make the effort, or you dont: its your choice, your money, and, eventually, your loss. But its not your choice, your...
