Rupert Murdochs News Corp. has reached an agreement to buy Dow Jones for $5 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal.
That price tag is the same as Murdochs original offer and the Dow Jones board will meet tonight to approve the deal.
What remains to be seen is whether the Bancroft family, which controls 64 percent of Dow Jones voting power, goes for it. Through the Journal there has been a lot of positioning by the Bancroft family to either get a better price or find another buyer.
A few observations:
Its clear that Dow Jones doesnt have any other buyers. Without Murdochs bid theres no way Dow Jone...

John Powers, CEO of Digipede, and I had a lovely conversation the other day. Before we could really examine the companys virtualization technology and approach to the market, John mentioned that his company was named Microsoft ISV/Software Solutions Partner of the Year in 2007. When one considers how many ISV partners Microsoft has, thats quite impressive.
Havent heard of Digipede? I hadnt heard of them either until I had a chance to speak with them about 2 years ago. Heres how the company would describe the Digipede Network:

Days after announcing a 17% price cut, Sony decides to phase out the $499 PlayStation 3 games console, leaving US buyers with a choice - buy the 80GB PS3, or buy something else.
The $499 PS3 will continue to be offered for sale until current stocks are depleted. Sony says that they it currently has ample supply (estimates suggest 2 - 3 million) of the budget console, so if youve been pondering a purchase for a while, nows the time to make a decision.
Many are expecting that the 80GB model will come down to $499 shortly after stocks of the 60GB model have run out, but Sony wont comment on this at present....

One of the iPhones most nifty features dialing any phone number by simply tapping on a Web page can be its most sinister.

Security researchers at SPI Labs says this feature can be exploited by hackers to pull off nefarious stunts like redirecting phone calls placed by the user to different phone numbers of the attackers choosing; tracking phone calls pl...

Trying to clarify the Sun Ray difference

Frequent contributor Erik Engbrecht had this to say last week in response to my comment that the Sun Ray does no processing and isnt, therefore, a client-server client: thin, fat, or otherwise:
Smart, Thick, Thin, Display
Its all word games. Depending on how you define processing, there is processing going on. It still has to render graphics, translate keyboard and mouse events, etc. A SunRay is just a compacted Sun workstation of yesteryear without a harddrive and special firmware designed to work solely as an X-Windows se...

In another case that puts into question the usability of electronic voting machines, a California judge is likely to order a new election for a Berkeley, CA, ballot initiative that lost due to dubious electronic voting machine data, reports IDG News Service.
Judge Winifred Smith of the Alameda County Superior Court said she may put a medical marijuana initiative back on the ballot due to a questionable ballot count. The medical marijuana initiative lost by fewer than 200 votes. When Americans for Safe Access, a medical-marijuana advocacy group, sued Alameda County for a recount, t...

Why Project Reviews Usually Suck

Vernon Riley asks, “Do You Want to Discover the Truth About Your Projects?,” as the lead-in to a discussion of project reviews. Vernon offers examples of how biased analysis prevents accurately understanding a project’s risks and potential failure points. Of course, lack of critical oversight ultimately facilitates denial and information-hiding, which is integral to many failure situations.
Unfortunately, it’s difficult to get under the surface of the dynamics that drive success and failure of any complex project. Many project reviews consist of simple checklists and progress metrics, which i...

An audit of the Massachusetts state crime lab revealed that evidence in 16,000 criminal cases was never analyzed.
Denial and information hiding are frequent components of the project failure lifecycle, whether in the crime lab or in the IT world. Eventually, the hidden problems see the light of day, usually after lots of wasted time and money.

More incredible iPhone numbers: 33% of surveyed plan to buy!

I tend to get a little skeptical when I read stuff like this but according to Lightspeed Research who conducted a survey days after the release of the iPhone, just about one third of the nearly 40,000 people surveyed plan to buy one and 90% of them had heard about the iPhone. Thats a stunning accomplishment no matter how you slice it.
Consider these findings from the survey:
Thirty-two percent of those who do not currently own an iPhone stated that they do intend to purchase one, with 8% planning to purchase in the next 3 months and 22% planning to purchase some time in the future.
Respondents ages 44...
