Neptec Design Group, a Canadian company and a NASA prime contractor for 25 space missions, was kind enough to send me exclusive images of Endeavours damaged tiles during its last take-off. So here are some of these pictures provided by Neptec. For more information, please read a recent interview with Iain Christie, the Neptecs president.

Napster flummoxed by Yahoo Music Unlimited

Peter Rojas   Year:by , posted May 18th 2005 at 6:13AM   Source Site:engadget

Despite Yahoo having put the hurt on them last week with introduction of their new budget priced Yahoo Music Unlimited online music download subscription service, Napster says they have no plans to drop the price theyre charging for Napster To Go. Hard to imagine why someone would pay $14.99 a month for a virtually identical service which Yahoo only charges $4.99 a month for (if you pay for a year in advance), but Napster doesnt have the deep pockets Yahoo has. You can almost hear the fear in Napster CEO Chris Gorogs voice when he talks about how unlike Yahoo theyre not positioning themselves as a "discount product" (this after months and months of ads touting Napster To Go as being a better bargain than iTunes) and when he admits that his company has "no idea" what the impact of Yahoo...

Sorell SF-3500 mini PMP

Barb Dybwad   Year:by , posted May 18th 2005 at 6:13AM   Source Site:engadget

There seems to be a proliferation of these small PMPs coming out, a la Samsung YP-T8-style. Heres a new one from lesser-known Sorell. The SF-3500 is a flash-based MPEG4 player ("Pixtree" format? Anybody know what up with that?) that also does WMA, OGG, JPEG, and TXT. Its pretty diminutive at 66 x 32 x 15.7mm and 33 grams, with a 128 x 80 pixel screen. Its also got an FM tuner and a line-in jack, and will come in 256MB, 512MB and 1GB sizes. [Via DAPreview] ...

DVD format war peace talks: game on!

Barb Dybwad   Year:by , posted May 18th 2005 at 6:13AM   Source Site:engadget

Okay, just yesterday things werent looking so hot for the HD-DVD/Blu-ray peace process, which now has turned into some strange hybrid of international arbitration, heated tennis championship and summer camp deathmatch. The latest is that the presidents of Sony, Toshiba and Matsushita are gonna sit down to try and make nice in order to break the stalemate. That meeting could take place as early as this week, although it requires coordinating the schedules of all three head honchos considering we have a tough enough time getting all of our slacker friends in the same room for a nice wine and cheese, we can only imagine the difficulties involved in getting this meeting off the ground. Consumers, cross your fingers. ...

AMBER Alerts come to SMS

Donald Melanson   Year:by , posted May 18th 2005 at 6:13AM   Source Site:engadget

Starting today, AMBER Alerts, the service for bringing attention to missing children, will be available on cellphones via SMS. Cellphone users simply have to sign up on the Wireless AMBER Alerts website and enter the areas they would like to receive alerts for. Apparently, 90% of US cellphone subscribers are currently covered by the service, with most of the rest receiving coverage in the next two months. Theres no charge for the service other than the usual carrier imposed SMS fees. [Via Mobile Tracker] ...

Roomba robot love me

Thomas Ricker   Year:by , posted May 18th 2005 at 6:13AM   Source Site:engadget

Now, please rid your mind of your Asian-robot-sex-fantasy filth as were going to talk about children. No, not the sweet, doe-eyed children of Disney fiction, but those seething candy-grubbing monsters we must deceive into obedience with our obey-or-else bunco (coal in stocking, Teddy is watching you, mommy wont love you anymore). Seems the Roomba is not only an effective cleaning agent, but according to Wired Magazines Chris Anderson, is also an effective robotic "child herder" simultaneously coaxing children to clean while sapping them of their wakeful vigour. This is an important revelation for us since the average age of the Engadget intern is 6 and a half ? old enough to write in simple sentences but not old enough to sass us in a hurtful way. Hmmm, come to think of it, maybe those ...

Cellphones are /more dangerous in rural areas

Barb Dybwad   Year:by , posted May 18th 2005 at 6:13AM   Source Site:engadget

The saga continues. The latest in the cellphones dangerous/not dangerous epic tale is that researchers in the UK are claiming that mobile users in rural areas are at a much higher risk of brain cancer than their urban-dwelling counterparts. The idea is that in areas of lower reception, the radiation level is increased in efforts to make up for poor signals, resulting in a three-fold increase in brain tumor diagnosis for those in rural areas. Of course, the sample size was too small and not geographically spread out enough (1400 Swedes), so the chairman of the House of Commons select committee on science and technology called for further research (surprise!) and then came to the next logical conclusion: until that research is done, mobile phones should be banned. Seems highly pragmatic t...
