If you werent convinced that social networking was as much a feature as a product, look no further than eBay neighborhoods. The e-commerce giant has rolled out over 600 niche social networks around different product categories, where members can upload photos, contribute to discussion forums, read blog entries, as well as access and write product guides and reviews.
Current neighborhoods include ones based around the iPhone, StarWars, and coffee.
Naturally, I checked out the latter.

Microsoft has made available for download patches to an Excel 2007 bug discovered late last month and is working on pushing the fix out over Microsoft Update.
The Excel team acknowledged the obscure bug on September 24 which affected Excel 2007 and Excel Services 2007 users attempting to perform calculations of numbers around 65,535 and 65,536. Officials said Excel was calculating the values correctly, but the function in it that takes the value and formats it to be displayed on the screen was faulty

Can you spot the PC in this picture? Its behind the 22 LCD display and its actually holding up the LCD. [See my image gallery for more and larger photos.] Theres plenty of room under the display for all your important stuff. Now you can actually put your CENTER speakers in the center rather than off to the side because the LCD monitor stand is taking up center. The Polycom Communicator also found a home underneath the LCD taking center stage. Theres also a convenient powe...

Late last year I had a chance to check out the myvu Made for iPod Fully Loaded package and thought it was an excellent way to view video content on the iPod. Unfortunately, I didnt own an iPod and had to just borrow one for the review so I didnt move forward with a purchase of the myvu personal media viewer. Thankfully, myvu contacted me a few weeks ago to let me know about their latest product, the myvu Universal Edition personal ...

Over on Apple Matters I came across an interesting post by Steven Leigh which considers 8 reasons why Windows users dont switch to Mac. Leigh is a recent Mac switcher and he has an interesting insight into the issues surrounding making a switch, but I think that there are several areas where he misses the mark.
The first reason he give is ignorance.
Ignorance is merely a lack of knowledge, and when it comes to Macs, most Windows users, myself included, are extremely uninformed.
There are more Windo...

After my first partial day at Altiris/Symantecs ManageFusion, its struck me how important a good set of backup tools are for virtualized environments. Since there are many hidden events in such an environment, comprehensive and automated tools are critical.
It appears that the folks in the world of backup software are on a collision course with some of the folks in the virtual processing software market . Both communities appear to be moving towards a central point where they can automate and orchestrate virtualized environments. I really have to learn more about this movem...

In the world of Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs), Game Masters are mysterious and powerful entities with the power of life and death over mere mortal players. Like the mythical deities of old, their appearance can mean disaster or delight for those around them. In an exclusive interview with ZDNet, we managed to summon one of these denizens of virtual adventure to get an inside look at their unique position. As Dorothy discovered behind the curtain at the Emerald City, however, the reality isn’t quite as glamorous as you might have imagined.

Reading George Ous post today, OLPC is the PC you cant ever criticize, reminded me of a conversation I had with my kids doctor the other day. It went something like this:
Doctor: I heard on the radio this morning about a great little laptop that you can get for $300. You get one and then they send another one to some developing country. Have you heard about it?
Me: Actually, I have. Its closer to $400, but thats about the idea. Its called the XO from a group called One Laptop Per Child. Im supposed to be receiving a competitor to the XO this week for a hands-on review.
Doctor: Re...

House Dems ready bill for umbrella surveillance of foreign targets

Does this sound like a Democratic plan? A secret court would be able to issue one-year umbrella warrants allowing the government to intercept e-mails and phone calls of foreign targets without independent approval of each target. No? That is the plan that House Democrats are preparing to pass, however, The Washington Post reports.
These would be the same Democrats that passed the Protect America Act this summer that expanded the governments ability to spy on foreign target on U.S. soil without a warra...
