I was hangin out on Slashdotover the weekend when I saw this post about some guy who had apparently built his own full-screen, thin-client VoIP phone.
I followed the link to a Web page maintained by "R. Sohan." Apparently, Mr. Sohan hasworked withone of the "beautiful but useless Broadband Phones" orphaned when AT&T Research Cambridge (U.K.) closed down.
According to Mr. Sohan, hes made the phone functional. And more than that! Were talking 65K colors, a 640480 screen,8MB of flash memory, a touchscreen, and a sound card running a flavor of the Linux 2.2 kernel.
If you want to read the basics of how he brought the phone to life, here you go. If your curiosit...

This weekend, I received a vaguely written press release about an "opportunity" to participate in the "World Record for the Most Participated, Longest International Call Using VoIP."
Certainly not short on hyperbole, the press release went on to say that this event would be "the most thrilling communications feat ever attempted since Alexander Graham Bells first telephone call."
Strike a blow for modesty! Woo-hoo!
Language like that made me think of whatever the VoIP equivalent would be to the old college stunt of seeing how many people you could stick in a phone booth. In other words, lets see how many people we can get to participate in thi...

Misconceptions about Samba, and interoperability

Andrew Tridgell clears up a few misconceptions about Samba over on Groklaw. Samba, in case you arent familiar with the project, provides print and file services to SMB/CIFS clients. Samba is probably used most often to allow Linux servers to offer print and file sharing services to Windows clients, but its not limited to working with Windows or running on Linux.
Its not uncommon for people to describe Samba as "reverse-engineering" Microsofts protocols so that Samba can work with Microsoft clients. Tridgell points out that the Samba team actually uses the "French Cafe" method to figure out how to work with Microsoft clients.
Imagine you wanted ...
