The End, Continued
http://blogs.tnr.com/ tnr/ blogs/ the_plank/ archive/ 2008/ 07/ 22/ the-end-continued.as...
Last week I wrote an (already belated) post on the London Timess exceptionally lame list of best movie endings, citing The Third Man as an obvious omission and Monsters Inc. as a somewhat less obvious one. I included a YouTube of the former but couldnt find one of the latter at the time. Well, I subsequently stumbled across one here and found it as ineffably sweet as remembered. (Its a long clip; you can skip from about the one-minute mark, after Sully has delivered Boo to her room, to the five-minute mark, when he gets to go back.) Also, as long as Im on the subject, another film I should have mentioned (I may roll out one or two more as th...

The Beam Bed Makes Drooling on the Pillow a Divine Experience [Furniture]
http://gizmodo.com/ 5027664/ the-beam-bed-makes-drooling-on-the-pillow-a-divine-ex...
Theres nothing particularly technologically innovative about the Beam Bed, but it uses a sunburst-shaped lighting and support system to emit a glorious glow thats perfect for wooing the ladies/thwarting the monsters. As weve long been scared of both said species, were pleased to see that the furniture market is finally catering to our insecurities with no shortage of style. Now just to find some plastic "rainburst" sheets and all of our sleeping abnormalities will be cured at last. [Lago via CribCandy]

Metered Internet: The Death of Web Work?
http://webworkerdaily.com/ 2008/ 07/ 22/ metered-internet-death-of-web-work/
Our parent blog GigaOM is doing good work covering the coming rise of metered internet plans for consumers. If you havent followed the story, its worth catching up on: depending on how this shakes out over the next few years, many web workers could find their careers pinched or shut down entirely by rising costs. The basic news is simple: large carriers like AT&T and Time Warner want to shut down the "all you can eat" monthly internet pricing for your DSL or other high-speed connection, and change over to tiered usage-based pricing.

AT&T Navigator Service goes Global
http://www.ubergizmo.com/ 15/ archives/ 2008/ 07/ att_navigator_service_goes_global.h...
News has it that AT&Ts Navigator location-based service will be expanding overseas, giving bouquets to AT&T for being the first US carrier that offers international navigation capabilities. Known as the AT&T Navigator Global Edition, this service functions across 20 countries including North America, the U.S. Caribbean, and the majority of countries in Western Europe. It will also run perfectly fine within the boundaries of half a dozen Chinese cities - Beijing, Shanghai, Qingdao, Shenyang, Tianjin, and Qinhuangdao. This comes as no surprise since AT&T is an official sponsor of the US Olympic Team.

Is Aviation Security Cost-Effective?
http://freakonomics.blogs.nytimes.com/ 2008/ 07/ 22/ is-aviation-security-cost-effec...
Is Aviation Security Cost-Effective? By Freakonomics Since 9/11, the U.S. has spent $6 billion a year on aviation security to prevent a similar attack. The two most direct efforts to prevent airliner hijackings have been the hardening of cockpit doors and increased presence of air marshals on flights. These measures alone have cost the government and airlines $1 billion a year. Is that money well spent?

Five minutes with psychedelics researcher Bill Richards
http://www.mindhacks.com/ blog/ 2008/ 07/ five_minutes_with_ps.html
Psychologist Bill Richards studies the medical potential of the hallucinogenic drug psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms. Hes part of the research team at the respected Johns Hopkins Medical School who are studying whether psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy can help people with cancer cope with the psychological impact of their condition. The project is a hot topic at the moment, partly because the research team are looking for volunteers with a diagnosis of cancer to take part in the pioneering study, and also because several of their recent findings have made headlines.

Happy 50th anniversary, Jay Barbree!
http://www.tvsquad.com/ 2008/ 07/ 22/ happy-50th-anniversary-jay-barbree/
Filed under: News, TV Royalty, Celebrities, Reality-Free The name might not immediately ring a bell, but you know who he is. Jay Barbree is the guy who reports for NBC/MSNBC whenever there is space news or a shuttle launch. It seems like hes had the job forever, and actually, he has. Yesterday Barbree celebrated 50 years of reporting on the space program for the network. In fact, Barbree is the only journalist to cover every single manned mission that the U.S. space program has had, starting in the early 60s.

Motorola Ischia EM330 for China approved by FCC
http://www.unwiredview.com/ 2008/ 07/ 22/ motorola-ischia-em330-for-china-approved-b...
It appears that Motorola either doesnt have the strength or the resources to pump out great phones like the Motorola ZN5 every month for the rest of their life as a company, so they work on "small stuff" every once in a while. The upcoming Motorola EM330, a.k.a. Ischia, is an example of this, as its highlights include a VGA camera, FM radio, and Bluetooth connectivity. Also included in the EM330s punitive spec sheet are Push-to-talk technology, microSD card support up to 2GB and an external display. No info on pricing for this one yet.

What in hell do stories have to do with innovation?
http://shoptalkmarketing.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 07/ what-in-hell-do-stories-have-to-do...
Regular readers may be tiring of the constant barrage of story-related posts, or at minimum be trying to figure out how they relate to the title of this blog. Here are some words that I hope tie it together. More and more products are launched and evolve in an iterative fashion. Version 1 does this, version 2 does that, and version 3 finally hits the mark and becomes the standard (exhibit A: Windows). Those iteration windows are becoming tighter, so good information as a basis of planning product changes is invaluable. Google in particular has turned this approach into an art form.
