This is rich: Paul Thurrott just had one of his test systems rejected by WGA. Note to Microsoft:Accusingone of your mostenthusiastic and supportive journalistic contacts of being a pirate and demanding that he fork over $149 for a new license is a really, reallystupid media relations strategy.
According to one of the screens that Paul published, the key used to activate his copy of Windows "is counterfeit and was most likely generated by a non-sanctioned Microsoft key generator." Now, Paul and I travel in many of the same circles andare members of manyof the same Microsoft programs. Hiscopy probably came from an MSDN distribution. I have a shelf full of ...

On Wednesday, in response to my publication of a recording of a call that took place between me and a customer service rep named Rudy at T-Mobile, Cornell Cunningham, senior manger of customer care at T-Mobile, phoned me to say he was appalled at Rudys aggressiveness and the tone and that T-Mobile would be issuing me a refund for failed hot spot service (what I wanted in the first place). He also asked me if I wouldnt mind following up with a post indicating that T-Mobile had contacted me to make good on the situation. I told Cunningham that if he put wh...

Google and the drag effect

The recent Hitwise numbers on Google show the same trend as in past monthssearch rules and the rest of the properties come along for the ride in the back seat. You would think that search, as well as an increasingly integrated set of communications services, would create more of a drag effect, upping the usage of other Google properties and drawing users away from competitors sites, but that doesnt seem to be the case. However, given the volume of searches, even a small percentage for Google Maps (almost 1 percent) can be a big number compared to competitors with equivalent service.
Many of Googles properties dont enjoy a drag effect becau...

Proving that Intel and AMD are locking horns in an absolute bloodbath right now (especially on the client side), AMD fell $80 million shy of Wall Streets expectations when it announced its second quarter results yesterday. According to News.coms Tom Krazit:
Analysts polled by Thomson First Call had originally been expecting $1.3 billion in revenue, but revenue from desktop processors was lower than expected owing to deep price cuts on Intels part in the desktop processor market, AMD executives said on a conference call.
Between yesterdays after-hou...

Its just $500,000, but its better than nothing.
The National Science Foundation has announced a grant to the Champaign-Urbana Community Wireless Network (CUCWN) for help in developing open source standards in wireless mesh.
The area is home to the University of Illinois (go Illini) andI hope its not a coincidence that UI is also where the Mosaic browser was developed. UI is a partner in the grant.
The project is spearheaded by Sascha Meinrath (left), a longtime leader in the technology of wireless mesh.
While most open source projects target software companies like Microsoft or Oracle, the gamein this case ...

Heres a question I received by email the other day:
"I want to build a general purpose Core 2 Duo based PC that costs no more that $1,000. How would you spend the cash?"
The first place to start is to choose a CPU out of the Core 2 Duo range. Heres a table listing the features and approximate prices of the Core 2 Duo processors:
Processor
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600

Google has just released its Q2 results and, like a true life Willie Wonkas chocolate factory, the worlds media continues to be enthralled with this uber-successful Internet innovator.
Googles Q2 completes a set of Web company announcements this week. Earlier this week Yahoos stock went down after their second quarter results announcement disappointed, Apple reported rosier third-quarter results, eBay also announced earnings, and Microsoft had its 4th quarter results.
As David Jackson noted, Googles profits are very healthy:

If Charles Schulz were still around writing "Peanuts," would Lucy be taunting Charlie Brown in online venues, instead of in person? Would Linus be using Linux? Would Schroeder trade in a piano keyboard for a computer keyboard to become a service-oriented maestro?
Oliver Widder saw my recent post on predictions of the impending "demise" of Java Enterprise Edition, and added a humorous cartoon twist on the whole matter, posted here.
Widder takes a look ten years into the future, 2016, with some folks wondering what all the fuss was about back in 2006. Nice job!

Remember all the rumors about Apples "true video" iPod? The one with the full-screen display and the virtual click wheel that appeared and disappeared as needed? My problem with that concept was something that has been the scourge of the iPod nano - scratches.
I originally dismissed the early "all-screen" (or button-less) iPod mockups as fantasy because of the overwhelming potential for scratching. How on earth could Apple release an iPod that required users to drag their fingers across the screen in order to change the volume or to switch tracks? It would have more scratches that a dog with fleas.
Apple appears to have learned from the scratching fiasco known as ...

A new Web services survey finds that the percentage of functioning SOAs has almost doubled 24% of respondents are saying they currently have what they consider to be an SOA, compared to 13% saying so last year at this time.
The survey from Evans Data finds that more Web services are being put into production at companies. Thirty percent of respondents will be using more than 20 services in the next year, a 58% increase from today.
The survey of 400 developers and managers also found that Web services still have issues, such as security and downtime. Half of the respondents are saying that when their most reliable Web services go down, they usually s...

Ex-Microsoft uberblogger and Podtech executive Robert Scoble is starting to really feel the weight of responsibility when running a Web startup. Investors have provided cash flow to speculate on the companys prospects and now its up to him to find a way to make it all work. Pointing to a great write-up on the challenges of Web 2.0 revenue by Ajit Jaokar, Roberts mind is clearly on how hes going make it happen:
[O]ne thing I’ve learned in my life is that VC’s want their money back. Oh, and they are hoping you’re gonna give...
