IBM leads. Now who will follow?

Author:Charles Cooper

Sure its a marketing gimmick but IBM still deserves kudos for a plan to help employees become teachers.

With all the hand-wringing about the looming shortage of math and science teachers, youd think the folks in Washington would have led the way? No such luck.

Hard to understand why the great thinkers in the administration treat this issue with lassitude. Silicon Valley notables like former Intel CEO Craig Barrett have expressed growing concern about the ability of U.S. students to compete on a par with students overseas in mathematics and the natural sciences has tech industry notables climbing the walls. Unless the current system gets repaired, Barrett and others wonder where they will find the replacement workforce once the current generation heads off into splendid retirement.

And this is not to lay everything at Uncle Sams door. The tech CEOs, who have bloviated long and hard about what needs to be done, can match IBM and put their own money behind their words. Especially after the tax windfall these folks have enjoyed in the last year. For those who may have forgotten, President Bush put his signature in 2004 on a bill that allowed U.S. firms to repatriate over $100 billion in "trapped profits" from abroad at a bargain-basement 5.25 percent rate. Silicon Valley accounts for more than $30 billion of that amount.

First Xbox 360 Elite pre-order ready for your cash

Ryan Block   Year:by , posted Apr 2nd 2007 at 5:01AM   Source Site:engadget

And in come the Xbox 360 Elite pre-orders. You know when its coming, for how much, and what youre gonna get, so its really just a matter of asking yourself whether youre hardcore enough to drop almost five bills on an(other) Xbox 360. Well, that and whether you can sneak that cash out of the old joint checking account without your significant other noticing. (Side note: Circuit City lists all the accessories -- including the 120GB drive -- as being released early on the 25th, unlike the Elite, which is still set for the 29th.) [Thanks, Cosmin] Pre-order: Elite, 120GB drive, black controller, play and charge, black battery pack...

Steve Jobs presenting in London at EMI event, Beatles rumors flow again

Ryan Block   Year:by , posted Apr 2nd 2007 at 5:01AM   Source Site:engadget

Looks like El Jobso is coming out of his busy, busy office in Cupertino to, of all things, present "exciting new digital offering" at an EMI media event in London. Now, EMI is, as many know, where much of The Beatles catalogue resides, and none of that music has ever been made available online; weve long heard rumors of Apple getting the digital exclusive -- especially since Apple Corps and Apple, Inc. have settled their differences -- so to you, dear reader, we submit this: wouldnt any kind of real Beatles fan already have all the cuts on vinyl or CD -- or at least have downloaded or copied all they need? And hell, anyone who doesnt already have this stuff can always go pick it up relatively cheaply at any local record store and rip it -- at least then you wont have to deal with the DRM....

HDMI specific Xbox 360 Elite details emerge

Conrad Quilty-Harper   Year:by , posted Apr 2nd 2007 at 5:01AM   Source Site:engadget

If youve been oooing and ahing at the Xbox 360 Elites HDMI connection -- which really should have been there all along -- then this is the post for you: a source at Microsoft has posted specific details of the Elites HDMI capabilities. Apparently the Elite will only support the 1.2 HDMI standard, and not the 1.3 spec which would have enabled TrueHD or Dolby Digital+. As such, youll have to stick with regular DD, DTS, and WMA-Pro for your sound output. It also only supports dual channel PCM output, not full 5.1 channel, and if you want full 5.1 PCM output the tipster cheekily recommends "purchasing the Toshiba A2 player" which is much cheaper than the $479 Elite. At this point the complexity of the tech talk takes a step up, as amirm refers to a fall update that will bring support for "dif...

Real interview with Fake Steve Jobs

Ryan Block   Year:by , posted Apr 2nd 2007 at 5:01AM   Source Site:engadget

We got a precious few minutes to sit down and talk to the man himself. Thats right, we landed a real interview with Fake Steve Jobs. In it, "El Jobso" reminisces about his drug-addled youth, what he does to the traitorous wretches that leak Apple products before theyre launched, the questions they ask you when you apply for a job at Apple, and even how he really feels about my girlfriend. Not to be missed! So, thanks for the interview, Steve. Youre most welcome. Namaste. So, whats the hardest thing about being Steve Jobs? The constant pressure and sh*tstorm of a million distractions. Eurotards, Microtards, longhairs. Not to mention the SEC and US Attorneys office. Oh and Greenpeace. I hate Greenpeace. Really -- a lot. What about people that ask you for tech support? Do you g...

NXP delivers the next "worlds smallest" WiFi chip: BGM220

Darren Murph   Year:by , posted Apr 2nd 2007 at 5:01AM   Source Site:engadget

Sheesh, this race for the "worlds smallest" anything is seriously getting out of hand, but if itll make our future handsets and wireless routers a tenth of a cubic centimeter smaller than before, we suppose well have to digress. NXP Semiconductors is reportedly ready to "start sampling a single-package 81-pin TFBGA WiFi chip that it says is the smallest device yet for 802.11 b/g connectivity." The GBM220 is, of course, eying the lucrative mobile handset market first and foremost, but handheld gaming systems and PDAs will certainly be in the mix as well. The chip itself comes in at a wee five- x five-millimeters, supports SDIO / SPI host interfaces, handles WPA2 / WMM, features an "ultra-low power drain," and should play nice with Windows Mobile, Windows CE, Symbian, and Linux. Actually sorta Turbocharged PC

Peter Rojas   Year:by , posted Apr 2nd 2007 at 5:01AM   Source Site:engadget

Its not often you get to see two obsessive mod cultures properly mashed up together like this, but Mark Purney grafted the turbocharger from a late 90s Mitsubishi Eclipse onto a PC for use as a case fan. Doesnt actually turbocharge anything -- especially since you wouldnt actually want to pressurize the inside of a PC -- Mark says he put this mod together because was tired of seeing ads for "turbocharged" PCs, a term that doesnt really mean much in the context of computing. And believe us, if theres one thing were about, its respecting the integrity of the word "turbocharged." [Via AutoBlog and HackedGadgets]...

Naked Steve Jobs accosted by Greenpeace

Paul Miller   Year:by , posted Apr 2nd 2007 at 5:01AM   Source Site:engadget

We shudder to think how many Apple fanboys that have secretly fantasized about this day. Well, sorry to disappoint, but Steve Jobs wears leafy garments underneath it all. Hes also not so sure about this whole "I like Apple, but without toxic substances" thing being postulated by the dont-you-have-bigger-fish-to-fry folks at Greenpeace. Whats he pondering? "How can I cram more toxic substances into something as small as the shuffle?" Or perhaps "Where did I put those pants?" We just might never know....

"Wii-volution" HDMI enabled, 160GB HDD packing Wii: are you fooled?

Conrad Quilty-Harper   Year:by , posted Apr 2nd 2007 at 5:01AM   Source Site:engadget

As of writing, theres still a few hours to go until the day that pranksters worldwide like to call their own. Unfortunately that doesnt mean we get to escape from the droll task of reporting on outlandish and suspect game console rumors. This latest one is the most unlikely example weve seen for a while and its not just the claimed features that stir our suspicions. The premise of the "Wii-volution" rumor is that Nintendo is on the verge of releasing a version of the Wii with an HDMI port and a 160GB Hard Disk Drive integrated into the base of the console. The evidence is an extremely pixelated and blurry photo which points to something on the panel of a black Wii. Were just speculating here, but we think that model could potentially be a developers kit. And with that, we already feel stup...

Apple TV running full version of OS X

Ben Drawbaugh   Year:by , posted Apr 1st 2007 at 12:01AM   Source Site:engadget

We all knew it was just a matter of time until someone figured out how to run a full blown version of OS X on an Apple TV, but whod a guessed it would only take eight days? Semthex from hackint0sh has wrote a "processor emulation for the kernel", which was necessary to "sidestep" Apples hardware locks. Semthexs only problem was he didnt have an Apple TV, so with some help from Apple TV Hacks, they recruited some testers and a day later they were in business. This effectively creates the least expensive Mac ever made -- at $299 -- and with a better video card than a mini to boot. While we doubt anyone will want to use a computer with only 256 MB of RAM as their main machine, MythTV frontends and other media centric applications should run nicely.
