Christopher Grant   Year:by , posted Jan 8th 2007 at 2:35PM   Source Site:engadget

We interrupt our regularly scheduled CES blogathon to bring you some important industry news from the world of video games: the PlayStation 3s new (sort of) SIXAXIS controller has been honored by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences with a Technology and Engineering Emmy. Details are scarce, but the award will be handed over at an awards presentation being held tonight at ... wait, CES! Everything is captured in its gravitational pull, theres no avoiding it. Regardless, were not sure exactly why the Sixaxis is receiving this honor, short of it being a technology product that undoubtedly involved some engineering, but we cant help but think something in the world of television must have been more deserving of such accolades. But what ......

Buffalo AirStation Wireless - N Nfiniti Dual Band Router & AP WZR-AG300NH

Peter Rojas   Year:by , posted Jan 8th 2007 at 2:35PM   Source Site:engadget

Lets get this out of the way right now: Yes, thats really the name. Buffalo introduced the AirStation Wireless - N Nfiniti Dual Band Router & AP (WZR-AG300NH) today, which theyre claiming is the first wireless router to receive Windows Vista Premium Certification. Thats nice, but the real selling point is that it can handle simultaneous dual-band operation, meaning you can connect your PC over 802.11b/g and still stream video around your home over 802.11a (which maximizes the amount of bandwidth you have available for moving around high bitrate content like HD video). Debuts early next month with a retail price of $299....

HTC Omni specifications unearthed

Darren Murph   Year:by , posted Jan 8th 2007 at 2:35PM   Source Site:engadget

Hope you havent forgotten about the elusive HTC Omni, as that self-coined Universal successor now has an (almost complete) lineup of specs to go along with it. The handset will reportedly sport a whopping 4-inch 800 x 480 resolution display, boast a slightly slimmer / lighter enclosure than found on the Universal, and will pack a 400MHz Samsung SC244X processor, Qualcomm MSM 7200 chip, GSM / GPRS / EDGE / UMTS / HSDPA compatibility, 128MB of RAM, full QWERTY keyboard, 802.11b/g, and Bluetooth 2.0. Unfortunately, one of the most anticipated details -- whether or not itll boast VGA out -- remains unconfirmed, but at least weve got enough hard deets to assure us that this mobile should elicit quite a few grins when finally hits the streets. [Thanks, Led]...

Harman Kardon reveals Drive + Play II

Conrad Quilty-Harper   Year:by , posted Jan 8th 2007 at 2:35PM   Source Site:engadget

Harman Kardons Drive + Play iPod solution was an innovative enough solution to the problem of in-car iPod playback to warrant three separate mentions on this little site that youre currently reading. At CES, Harman Kardon has unveiled the second iteration of the Drive + Play, marking the occasion by sticking a big Roman "II" at the end. In case you didnt get it the first time around, the Drive + Play II is a media manager that takes the audio from your iPod, Zune, or Plays for Sure media player and routes it through your car stereo whilst simultaneously displaying song information on a separate 3.5-inch color LCD. Also part of the deal is a wireless control knob similar to the control scheme on BMWs iDrive system. This time around the Drive + Play can send your portable media players audi...

51GB triple-layer HD DVDs in the pipeline?

Darren Murph   Year:by , posted Jan 8th 2007 at 2:35PM   Source Site:engadget

Just after Verbatim announces that its shipping 30GB dual-layer HD DVD-Rs our way, here comes some more news to slightly deflate that bubble. At an HD DVD presentation held at CES, at interesting PowerPoint slide caught our eye, as it (very briefly) described plans to "expand HD DVD disc capacity from 15GB to 17GB per layer, and moreover, to add a third layer as well, eventually resulting in a 51GB HD DVD disc. Aside from upping the ante on Blu-rays capacity by a measly 1GB (currently, at least), its also noted that "technical feasibility" has yet to be confirmed, and that standardization wouldnt occur until Q4 of this year at the earliest, but its a novel idea to say the least. So if youre looking to pick up an HD DVD player right this moment, and cant wait to embrace all the potential c...

Ubicod UMS200 set top box does PVR and VoD

Conrad Quilty-Harper   Year:by , posted Jan 8th 2007 at 12:57PM   Source Site:engadget

Ubicod has thrown together the UMS200, a standard definition set top box which does a whole lot of interesting stuff with your video. The most interesting feature for us is the network capability made possible by two Ethernet ports. If you hook up a PC to the box you can watch live TV pretty much anywhere: it also goes the other way and lets you stream MP3s, pictures, and unnamed video file formats to your TV. Taking a little step back, the UMS200 also features a PVR function with time shifting for those of you that dont fancy watching TV on your laptop screen. Specs wise the UMS200 has a 200MHz processor for decoding MPEG-1, -2, and -4 video, as well as streaming MPEG-4 over a network at bitrates from 300kbps to around 6Mbps. Unsurprisingly for a standard definition device, it only featu...

ViewSonic announces PJ258D iPod-ready projector

Donald Melanson   Year:by , posted Jan 8th 2007 at 12:57PM   Source Site:engadget

ViewSonic has already managed to squeeze an iPod dock onto some of its LCD monitors, but the companys now taking things up a notch in the display size department, unveiling its first "Made for iPod" projector packing its trademark ViewDock connectivity. Apart from the iPod-centric design, the PJ258D appears to be a fairly standard DLP projector, with a 1024 x 768 XGA resolution, 2,000 ANSI lumens brightness, and a 2,000:1 contrast ratio, all in a four pound package. The iPod dock does seem to come at the expense of other inputs, however, with single s-video, composite, and VGA ports your only other options. Check out a couple of live shots of the projector after the break, and look for it arrive sometime in first quarter of this year for $999....

Reclusa gaming keyboard: Microsoft and Razers latest collabo

Peter Rojas   Year:by , posted Jan 8th 2007 at 12:57PM   Source Site:engadget

Microsoft already teamed up with Razer on the Habu, that gaming mouse they introduced back in August, now their partnership is back in effect with the Reclusa, a new gaming keyboard (a note to Microsoft and Razer: we know you were probably thinking of the Reclusa spider when you named this, but you should probably avoid names that evoke the well-worn stereotype of gamers as reclusive, isolated loners). Anyway, features theyre touting include ambient blue LED backlighting, "Hyperesponse Gaming Key Action" for "minimal latency", 12 programmable buttons (including two jog-dials and four bumper buttons), and not one, but two gold-plated USB ports. Should hit this spring with a retail price of $69.99....
